Analysis of Music Videos

Keith Ape - 잊지마 (It G Ma) (feat. JayAllDay, Loota, Okasian & Kohh) [Official Video]

Why I chose this video

The first video I will be analysing is a famous music video from the other side of the world. Keith Ape - It G Ma went viral in 2015 and made the top 5 in Korean charts. I chose this video because of its originality and interesting visuals.

Throughout the video we see young men in a hotel room dressed head to toe in expensive designer clothes rapping to their song. Bright vibrant colours are seen throughout the video which keeps the audience interested and forces anyone to not look away. It is influenced by the US rap scene, it is clear these artists had a lot of inspiration from the famous A$AP Mob.

I really like this video because it is so different to every other video as it stands out massively, this is personally one of my favourite music videos ever made.

French Montana - Unforgettable ft. Swag Lee

Why I chose this video

Another personal favourite of mine has to be French Montana - Unforgettable ft. Swag Lee.
The Video was shot in Kampala, Uganda directed by French Montana and Spiff TV and includes Ugandan young dance group known as the Ghetto Kids or Triplets and the Video has over 114 million views on YouTube.

The video is very simple and minimalistic, it features a group of children dancing to a song looking very happy along with the artists of the song. It is not like most video's in todays time with flashy cars and drugs being glamourised.

It stands out to me because It was something new, it was a breath of fresh air. It showed children living in poverty and being happy with nothing, they channel that through their dance moves and their energy. Them having no TVs and just learning how to dance, it just makes them have their own moves and their own swagger which what makes it so unique and special.

Research Magazine Advert

Mumford and Sons -  Sign No More

The magazine advert I will be analysing is Mumford & Sons advert of Sigh No More

Firstly, looking at this magazine advert I am immediately drawn to the four panel images of the band members. The images of the band have been styled with a polaroid effect which gives the advert an old school theme which is what the band aim for which also suggests they are of a indie rock genre. This is then supported with the instruments the artists are holding as they are common instruments used in this genre of music.

In addition, text plays a important role too. The band name is displayed in clear bold capital white letters which stands out against the black background. This type font is consistent throughout the advert and works effectively. Also displayed on the advert title, is a review written by music magazine company NME. This attracts a bigger audience as it promotes the album through a famous well known music magazine company.

Furthermore, the rest of the advert is institutional information. Clearly displayed is record labels signed with the band. An example of one on the bottom is 'Island Records' which signed with Mumford and Sons throughout 2013. Finally, we are shown three big hits which are included in this album. This attracts the audience as the charts are familiar with their big hits.

To conclude, the advert is very simple and minimalistic. They did this because it makes it easier for the audience to remember, which makes it a effective way of advertising as it sticks in the auidences brain.

Digipak Retailers

Digipak Retailers in High Street and Online Stores

Digipak CD's can be found anywhere including high street stores and online stores. A store that I looked closely at is HMV. I chose HMV because of their well known reputation of a retailer of music, film, games and technological products.

Online Website

Looking at the online website there is a wide range of Digipak's. Anybody can order a CD online and it will be delivered to their home. This is a effective way of retailing digipak's as a visit to the store is not needed.

High Street Store
In addition, in High Street stores there is also a wide range of CD's. All new albums and some old albums. There are also many genre's you can choose from.

I think the selling of CD's is a good way of distributing music. It gives you the advantage of ownership of an album rather than streaming it from a device, however because of the progressing progress of streaming online music it is becoming an old and outdated way of music.

The prices of the Digipak's are slightly higher than the amount of a online album however it is not a big difference. Personally, I prefer streaming music online because I can have as many albums as I want on the go rather than having to carry all my albums.

Digipak Nets

There are many different Digipak nets that are used. They are the outline of a Digipak. The most common Digipak's are 6 sides, this is a advantage as it allows the designer to include as much context as he/she wants. The simplest form of a digipak is the four sided Digipak. This is effective as it allows the designer to include the most important features of his/her album. It is also cheaper to produce which is a advantage for unsigned artists that do not have the money to produce mass batches of Digipaks

4 Side Digipak

The Digipak I would use is the 6 side Digipak because its the most common used Digipak.

Elements of Digipak's

Elements of Digipak

Front Cover - The front cover is always of the album title usually with the artist's name and a picture of the artist.

The artist can put anything he wants on the internal panels since he has put the most important information on the cover and back panel. This may include a booklet, centre fold, information about the album e.t.c

Booklets/Postcards/Posters - Booklets, Postcards and Posters can be included in Digipak's. This may include information about the artist, posters for fans or more detail on the album

Textual Analysis of Digipak

Front Cover - The front cover of the Digipak shows the artist walking along a lonely empty road. The title 'Recovery' with a red and white cross replacing the 'o' in the title, this symbol is linked to health at the time the artist was recovering from addiction and depression.

Spine & Back Cover B- The spine simply displays the title of the album and the artists name. The back cover shows the artist in Detroit which is his hometown along with the song titles displayed clearly underneath attached with the institutional information.

Internal Panels - Both internal panels show the artist trapped in a glass box which relates to his addiction and depression. Through this he connects with his fans by communicating his personal issues through his music. Furthermore he allows people to have different interpretations of his album through the use of the glass box.

Booklets/Postcards/Posters - A booklet is included which contains the tracks in great detail with everybody that contributed to the album. Eminem's logo of the backwards 'E' can be seen which shows the audience a recognisable image so people know what to buy in stores.

CD - The CD disk is a red cross which again relates to Eminem's recovery. The same colours are used throughout the album.
